Melaniuk-Wolny, Silesian University of Technology, Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering, Gliwice, Poland Complex analysis of concentration and form of occurrence such metals as Zn, Pb, Fe and Cu in slags formed during a current zinc production in the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) is a possible basis for development of optimal recovery technology. For this purpose studies of slags from the current production of the Shaft Furnace Unit and of the Lead Refining of the “Miasteczko Śląskie” Zinc Smelting Plant were carried out. The studies results show that slags includes high concentrations of: Zn from 0,064 % to 1,680 %, Pb from 10,56 % to 50,71 %, Fe from 0,015 % to 2,576 %, Cu from 7,48 % to 64,95 %, and change in a broad range. This slags show significant heterogeneity, caused by intermetallic phases (Zn Pb, Cu Zn, Cu Pb) formed on the surface thereof. It is so possible that slag can be a potential source of this metals recovery.

Economic and environmentally beneficial treatment of slags in DC arc furnaces

A common feature shared by all pyrometallurgical smelting processes is the production of slag. Slag is usually a byproduct of metal production, although there are processes (such as ilmenite smelting, for example) where the slag is the principal product. Most slags contain a significant amount of heavy metals, the release of which can cause environmental problems. However, the recovery of these...

Management of copper pyrometallurgical slags: giving additional value to copper mining industry

543 Introduction During the last years, due to world-wide economic recession and a large inventory of stock, copper reached a historical value of 0.59 US$/pound in 2001. This fact meant closing down many important mining companies in the world, mainly in USA. On the other hand, strong environmental restrictions have been imposed on the mining activity, and it is expected they will become more r...

Feasibility of recovering metals from associated slags

The associated mineral ore accompanying Valuable Metal Compounds (VMC) have been usually treated in a smelting furnace ,such as Blast Furnace, Reverberatory, Blowing Furnace, hence the VMC were mostly concentrated into the molten associated slags and separated from liquid metals. So the associated slags become an important man-made resources (Table I), in which the VMC exist dispersively in var...

Heat Recovery from High Temperature Slags: A Review of Chemical Methods

Waste heat recovery from high temperature slags represents the latest potential way to remarkably reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of the steel industry. The molten slags, in the temperature range of 1723–1923 K, carry large amounts of high quality energy. However, the heat recovery from slags faces several fundamental challenges, including their low thermal conductivity, inside ...

Current Operations in Smm's Slime Treatment

SMM operates an original slime treatment process for recovering precious metals and other metals (l'e,Se,Sb,Bi)from the copper and the lead anode tankhouse slimes. In recent years, the amount of slimes has increased and the pyrometallurgical processing units capacity became the bottleneck of the entire plants. For the expansion of the plant, new pyrometallurgical facilities, incorporating a BBO...
